Randy Travis Confesses Ignorance

Nov. 6, 2008 — When Randy Travis released his first single in 1985, the Internet
was practically unknown, hardly anyone had an e-mail address and the home computer
was even a bit of a novelty.
When he launched a new album, Around The Bend
, this summer, Randy it marked his first country project in eight years, and the
digital realm had moved even farther. He was asked by his record company to get up
to snuff on the new world — and he did, though it was a bit of a shock.
"MySpace, YouTube — I’ve never dealt with dot-com," he told
CMA Close Up
. "‘My space’ is pretty much something you don’t get in — that’s what I thought MySpace
was until we started this new album."
Randy has greatly improved his computer skills and his online presence. He released
one track as a digital download before the album, and he had his website completely
redesigned.
While the album represents a move forward in technology, it also represents a return
to a previous age. Randy had recorded only gospel albums for the previous eight years,
so working on a country project was a bit of a full-circle move.
"It felt great to start going through country material again and to go in the studio,"
he said. "If you ever were there in the studio with me, [producer] Kyle [Lehning]
and all the guys playing, we never truly go to work. It’s just a big rehearsal and
a lot of laughing, and you wonder how anything ever gets done."
Randy’s set to make an appearance Friday at the Country Music Hall of Fame, where
he’ll do a lengthy interview and sign copies of the new album in the gift shop. On
Sunday, he’s set to be inducted in the Music City Walk of Fame, along with Trace
Adkins, Martina McBride and Elvis Presley, among others.
